Contraflow system for HGVs in Tyrol does not violate EU regulations
In September 2017 Schmidt and the Bavarian transport minister Joachim Herrmann submitted an official complaint with the Commission in which they described the contraflow system with maximum limits for HGVs as a violation of the principle of the free movement of goods in Europe.
In a recent letter to the German transport minister Christian Schmidt, the European Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc has stated that the imposition of a maximum limit on the number of HGVs that can cross the border of Tyrol in one hour does not violate EU regulations and is only used as an extraordinary measure in periods when the volume of HGV traffic increases following public holidays when traffic bans are in force. Although the contraflow system prevents traffic jams on the roads of Tyrol, it causes traffic congestion in Bavaria, which is why Violeta Bulc calls on Germany and Austria to look for joint solutions to the problem.
