Traffic bans for trucks in Europe

Brenner: Austria and Italy Introduce Coordinated Truck Bans

From January 2026, traffic restrictions for heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes GVW on the Brenner corridor will apply to both Austria and Italy. These restrictions are closely linked and result from coordinated measures on both sides of the border due to the limited capacity of road infrastructure along one of Central Europe’s key transport corridors.

Austria - Restrictions on the A12, A13, and A14

Austrian restrictions affect key transit routes in Tyrol and are related to infrastructure work on the A13 Brenner motorway (Lueg Bridge).

The ban applies to:
➡️ 1. A12 Inntal, A13 Brenner, and A14 Rheintal/Walgau, when the purpose of travel is to reach the national border towards Italy - on the section from the Nößlach junction to the Brenner Nord junction:
▪️ Saturdays, 10 January - 14 March 2026 → 07:00 - 15:00
▪️ Saturday, 28 March 2026 → 07:00 - 15:00
▪️ Saturdays, 23 May - 6 June 2026 → 07:00 - 15:00
▪️ Saturdays, 27 June - 26 September 2026 → 07:00 - 15:00
▪️ Selected weekdays: 2 April (Thursday), 13 May (Wednesday), 22 May (Friday), 3 June (Wednesday), 2 October (Friday) → 07:00 – 22:00

➡️ 2. A13 Brenner between the Brenner Nord and Nößlach junctions towards Innsbruck:
▪️ Saturdays, 10 January - 14 March 2026 → 07:00 - 15:00
▪️ Saturdays, 4 July - 29 August 2026 → 07:00 - 15:00
▪️ Friday, 10 April 2026 → 07:00 - 22:00

The restrictions apply to all heavy goods vehicles and vehicle combinations over 7.5 tonnes GVW, except for transports covered by statutory exemptions (e.g., perishable goods, emergency transports, combined transport).

Italy - Restrictions on the A22 Brenner

At the same time, Italian truck restrictions apply on the A22 Brenner motorway in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano (South Tyrol).

Bans for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes GVW traveling northbound, from Vipiteno (Sterzing) towards the Austrian border (Brenner), are in force:
▪️ Every Saturday from 10 January - 14 March 2026 → 07:00 - 15:00
▪️ Friday, 10 April 2026 → 07:00 - 22:00

Trucks already on the A22 when the ban comes into effect are directed to designated buffer parking areas (SA.DO.BRE parking in Vipiteno or other parking areas indicated by Autobrennero S.p.A. and the Polizia Stradale).

Interdependence of Austrian and Italian Bans

The restrictions in Austria and Italy do not operate independently. The Italian bans on the A22 are a direct consequence of Austrian restrictions on the A13 Brenner. The purpose of introducing the bans on the Italian side is to prevent congestion of trucks at the Austrian border, maintain traffic safety in the Brenner Pass area, and adapt traffic management to the limited capacity on the Austrian side.
