Traffic bans for trucks in Europe

A12 in Austria is a trap for truck drivers. One mistake can cost hundreds of euros

On the A12 Inntal Autobahn in Tyrol, the night driving ban for trucks can become a costly trap. Violations are determined not only by the hours during which the restriction applies, but also by specific dates during the year. A mistake can result in a heavy fine on one of the most heavily controlled routes in Austria.

The restriction applies to the section from km 6.35 (Kufstein) to km 90.00 (Zirl) in both directions and concerns heavy goods vehicles with a gross vehicle weight above 7.5 tonnes, as well as articulated vehicle combinations (tractor unit + semi-trailer/trailer). The regulations clearly specify two periods of application:

❌ From 1 May to 31 October, the ban applies on weekdays from 22:00 to 5:00, and on Sundays and public holidays from 23:00 to 5:00.
❌ During the winter period, from 1 November to 30 April, the restrictions begin earlier — on weekdays already from 20:00 and last until 5:00, while on Sundays and public holidays they remain unchanged (23:00 - 5:00).

The dates are fixed by law, which means that a journey, for example during the night from 30 April to 1 May, may be subject to different rules than the day before. A list of exemptions is provided, but it is strictly defined and does not cover all transports considered urgent. The exemptions include, among others, the transport of perishable goods (such as fresh food), essential supplies (such as fuel), trips related to infrastructure maintenance, public services, and parts of combined transport operations. In practice, inspections focus precisely on verifying whether the use of these exemptions is justified.

The A12 section in Tyrol is one of the most heavily monitored routes in Austria. Night-time enforcement operations are regular, and penalties for violating the ban can amount to several hundred euros even for a single trip. In addition to the local restrictions on the A12, Austria also imposes a nationwide night driving ban from 22:00 to 5:00. In practice, this means that some restrictions already start to apply at 22:00 at the national level, while from 23:00 on the A12 section an additional, stricter local ban comes into force, covering a broader range of transport operations.
