H4 in Slovenia: Heavy goods vehicle transit from Italy redirected via Fernetti

Since 6 July, a new traffic management scheme has been in force on the H4 expressway in Slovenia between Vipava and the Nanos interchange. The changes are expected to remain in place until mid-November.

Under the new traffic arrangement, vehicles travelling towards Nova Gorica continue to use the H4 expressway, with traffic reduced to a single lane. In the opposite direction, from Nova Gorica towards Ljubljana and Koper, traffic has been diverted to the parallel state road between the Vipava and Razdrto interchanges.

➡️ Separate rules apply to transit heavy goods vehicles with a maximum authorised mass exceeding 3.5 tonnes travelling from Italy. This traffic is to be redirected via the Fernetiči / Fernetti border crossing.

➡️ Transit trucks arriving from Italy should not head towards the Vrtojba border crossing or the section of the H4 under reconstruction. Police will turn such vehicles back at the Šempeter pri Gorici interchange if they attempt to continue towards Vrtojba or the H4.

➡️ According to DARS, the restriction applies only to transit traffic. The notice does not indicate that the same rules apply to transport operations involving loading or unloading within the area affected by the roadworks.

DARS recommends checking the latest traffic information before departure, including on the promet.si website and in the Promet+ mobile application.

For companies organising transport between Italy and Slovenia, it is important to distinguish between the two traffic arrangements: traffic travelling from Nova Gorica towards Ljubljana and Koper has been diverted to the parallel road between Vipava and Razdrto, while transit trucks over 3.5 tonnes arriving from Italy must use the Fernetiči / Fernetti border crossing.
