Austria closes the A10 to trucks on summer Saturdays. Dates and exemptions
Summer transit through Austria will become more challenging. Additional traffic restrictions for trucks over 7.5 tonnes have been introduced on the A10 Tauern Autobahn on selected Saturdays. The restrictions apply to both the Salzburg–Villach and Villach–Salzburg directions, although the regulation provides for numerous exemptions.
Austria has published a regulation introducing seasonal traffic restrictions for heavy goods vehicles on the A10 Tauern Autobahn. The bans will apply on selected Saturdays from 11 July to 19 September 2026 and will affect vehicles with a maximum permissible gross weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes.
❌ Direction Villach (southbound): the ban applies between the Salzburg and Villach interchanges on every Saturday from 11 July to 8 August and from 22 August to 5 September 2026, between 07:00 and 15:00.
❌ Direction Salzburg (northbound): the restrictions apply between Villach and Salzburg on every Saturday from 18 July to 8 August and from 22 August to 19 September 2026, also between 07:00 and 15:00.
The regulation applies to trucks and tractor units with a maximum permissible gross weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes, as well as truck-and-trailer combinations whose combined maximum permissible gross weight exceeds 7.5 tonnes.
The regulation provides for a number of exemptions. The ban does not apply, among others, to the transport of slaughter animals, postal items, newspapers and periodicals, beverages destined for tourist areas, perishable food products, humanitarian aid shipments, emergency and rescue services, roadside assistance, waste collection services and scheduled public bus services.
The exemptions also cover certain regional transport operations, transport to and from selected Austrian administrative districts, regions of Bavaria, the north-eastern Italian provinces, as well as the Slovenian statistical regions of Gorenjska and Goriška.
The exemptions for combined rail-road and water-road transport have also been maintained, provided that the required documentation confirming the transport of the loading unit by rail or waterway is carried.
