Drivers should prepare for detours. Landeck Tunnel to close for two months
Austria is preparing for the complete closure of the Landeck Tunnel in Tyrol. From 12 October 2026, the tunnel will be closed to traffic for eight weeks, and traffic will be diverted via alternative routes.
ASFINAG has begun preparations for the first complete closure of the Landeck Tunnel in Tyrol. The tunnel will be closed from 12 October 2026 for eight weeks, with traffic diverted via routes through Landeck, Zams and Fließ. For drivers and carriers, this means allowing for possible delays and increased traffic volumes in the area in autumn.
The first preparatory works have already started on the L 76 road near Schwarzer Adler in Landeck. Further measures are planned for September on the B 171 road. Before the closure begins, ASFINAG aims to improve the capacity of the diversion routes and reduce the risk of congestion.
Preparations include:
➡️ diversion signs and additional information boards,
➡️ improved road markings,
➡️ widening at bottleneck locations,
➡️ traffic lights to control traffic flow.
The complete closure of the tunnel is necessary for technical and safety reasons. During this period, works will include the replacement of the ventilation system and the construction of cross-passages connecting the existing tunnel with the new emergency and rescue tunnel. According to ASFINAG, some of these works cannot be carried out while the tunnel remains open to traffic.
Before the October closure begins, intermittent night-time closures of the tunnel will also continue. These will allow some of the works to be carried out with as little impact as possible on daytime traffic. During the eight-week closure, traffic will be diverted onto the local road network. ASFINAG is particularly appealing to commuters to change their travel times where possible. Spreading traffic outside traditional peak hours is intended to increase the capacity of the diversion routes and reduce congestion. For road transport, however, the closure may mean longer journey times through the Landeck area, particularly when transit traffic volumes are high.
Detailed information on traffic management, diversion routes and the subsequent stages of the works is to be published before the closure begins. ASFINAG is also planning an information meeting for residents and businesses at the beginning of October.
The closure is part of a major modernisation project for the Landeck Tunnel. ASFINAG is simultaneously constructing an approximately 7-kilometre emergency and rescue tunnel, of which around 2.5 kilometres have already been completed. The modernisation also includes the replacement of power installations, lighting, ventilation, fire detection and drainage systems, as well as road resurfacing. The distance between emergency exits is to be reduced to less than 300 metres. The entire project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2030, with an investment value of €292 million.
