Catalonia introduces mandatory use of the AP-2 motorway for lorries

The absence of tolls on the AP-7 and AP-2 motorways from Wednesday, September 1, as a result of both concession agreements coming to an end, has prompted the Catalan authorities to extend lorry traffic restrictions that came into force in September 2018 in the provinces of Tarragona, Lleida and Barcelona.

Because of the GHV driving ban on the N-340 and N-232 national roads, lorry drivers have had to use the AP-7 and AP-2 toll motorways. A similar ban has been in effect the province of Girona since 2013.
As of September 1, the Catalan Transit Authority has extended the section of the N-240 road in the province of Lleida affected by the driving ban for heavy goods vehicles with 4 or more axles. Currently, the ban applies to the section from KP 87, 4, in Lleida, to KP 36.5, in Montblanc, so in practice from the Variante Sur exit from the city of Lleida (exit 5), lorries have to drive along the AP-2 motorway if they are going in the direction of Catalonia, not from Borges Blanques, as previously established. The prohibition does not apply to transports where the place of departure or the place of destination of the goods is located in the municipalities covered by the ban.
