Traffic bans for trucks in Europe

Sudden restrictions on Spain’s AP-7. Truck ban and 80 km/h limit

Strong wind gusts in the province of Tarragona have led to restrictions for trucks over 7.5 tonnes. On the AP-7 section between Cambrils and Amposta, a traffic ban applies in both directions, while on high-capacity roads in the region an 80 km/h speed limit and an overtaking ban have been introduced. Carriers must use alternative routes via the A-7 and N-340.

The Catalan Traffic Service announced temporary restrictions for heavy vehicles due to forecast strong winds in the province of Tarragona. According to messages published on the official Servei Català de Trànsit profile on X, the measures apply on Thursday, 19 February, from 7:00 to 19:00.

According to the authorities, heavy vehicles with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes travelling on high-capacity roads in the province of Tarragona must:
❌ use the right lane only,
❌ comply with the overtaking ban,
❌ observe a maximum speed limit of 80 km/h.

In addition, a complete traffic ban for heavy vehicles over 7.5 tonnes has been introduced on the AP-7 motorway between Cambrils and Amposta in both directions. This means that during the specified period, trucks are not allowed to use this section of the route.

Road authorities have indicated alternative routes:
❌ A-7 motorway
❌ N-340 national road – permanent truck restrictions on this road have been temporarily lifted for the duration of the measures.

For companies operating towards Valencia, Murcia or further south on the Iberian Peninsula, this means the need to closely monitor the situation and factor in possible delays. Wind-related restrictions in Catalonia are introduced periodically and may be implemented at short notice, especially on sections exposed to strong crosswinds, such as the AP-7 near the Ebro River delta.
