Traffic bans for trucks in Europe

2026-05-28

Not only Austria. Italy is also closing the Brenner route to trucks on 30 May

On 30 May, the Brenner corridor may become one of the most difficult points on Europe’s transport map. Austria and Italy will introduce truck blockades, mandatory exits from the A13 and A22 motorways, and restrictions that may result in many hours of delays on both sides of the border.

Transport through the Brenner corridor is facing major disruption. On Saturday, 30 May 2026, Austria and Italy will introduce extensive restrictions in connection with a demonstration planned in the Matrei am Brenner area in Tyrol. The protest is scheduled to take place on the A13 motorway between 12:00 and 17:30 and, according to the authorities, will cause serious disruption along the entire transport corridor.

In response, Austrian services have decided to temporarily close the Brenner crossing in both directions:
• from 09:00 to 19:00 for vehicles with a GVW of more than 7.5 tonnes,
• from 11:00 to 19:00 for all other vehicles.

In connection with this, the administration of the Province of Bolzano has also issued a special regulation concerning heavy transport on the Italian side. On 30 May, from 07:00 to 20:00 or until further notice, a ban on the movement of trucks over 7.5 tonnes will apply throughout the entire Province of Bolzano.

The main restrictions will apply to the Brenner A22 motorway in the northbound direction. Exemptions will apply to:
• vehicles heading to Ro.La. combined transport terminals, upon presentation of a reservation or ticket for 30 May,
• transport of perishable food products,
• transport of live animals,
• fuel transport,
provided that the trucks are not travelling directly towards the Brenner and have the required transport documents.

Additionally, from 10:30 to 20:00, all vehicles travelling north will have to leave the A22 motorway at the Vipiteno junction. The section between Vipiteno and the state border at Brenner will be completely closed to traffic. The restrictions will also cover:

• the SS49 road from Bressanone/Val Pusteria to the state border at San Candido–Prato alla Drava,
• the SS38 road from the end of the ME.BO route to Spondigna,
• the SS40 road from Spondigna to the Resia Pass,
• other local roads in the Province of Bolzano.

The authorities stress that, depending on the situation, further mandatory motorway exits or bans on entering the A22 may be introduced. Traffic metering may also be applied at the borders near the Resia, Rombo and Prato alla Drava passes. Trucks already on the A22 when the rules come into force are to be directed, among other places, to the SA.DO.BRE parking area in Vipiteno and other designated parking areas. Italian and Austrian services have also prepared an alternative “CORVETTE” diversion route via Germany’s A8 and Austria’s A10 Tauern and A23/A4.

The matter was also handled by the national traffic coordination centre “Viabilità Italia”, which agreed measures with services from Austria and Germany to limit traffic chaos. An increased number of Traffic Police patrols, emergency service operations and a broad information campaign for carriers have been announced.
