Traffic bans for trucks in Europe

Ukraine introduces summer restrictions for trucks. Bans will apply during hot weather

From 8 June, Ukraine is once again introducing seasonal restrictions for the heaviest vehicles, activated when the air temperature exceeds 28°C. Carriers must expect local bans during the hottest hours of the day, as the restriction periods may vary depending on the region.

From 8 June 2026, seasonal traffic restrictions for trucks related to high temperatures will again apply in Ukraine. The restrictions will be introduced on public roads of national importance when the air temperature rises above +28°C. They will apply to vehicles with an actual gross weight exceeding 24 tonnes and an axle load of more than 7 tonnes. The aim is to protect asphalt surfaces from damage and deformation caused by intense heat.

The restrictions do not apply to the transport of:
❌ dangerous goods,
❌ perishable goods,
❌ live animals and poultry,
❌ transport related to preventing or removing the consequences of emergency situations,
❌ military cargo,
❌ dual-use goods,
❌ property used for defence purposes.

The legal basis for the so-called temperature bans is Resolution No. 879 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine “On measures aimed at preserving public roads”, as well as road traffic and road infrastructure regulations. This solution has been used in Ukraine for many years and is introduced seasonally during periods of high temperatures.

Available regional announcements show that the exact hours of restrictions may be set locally. For example, in Odesa region the indicated period is from 10:00 to 20:00, while in Zakarpattia region it is from 10:00 to 22:00. At present, no single announcement has been published setting uniform restriction hours for the entire country.
